When should I enroll my child for the upcoming kindergarten school year?

It is best to plan ahead so enrolling in the months of January and February is suggested. This allows the school time to plan for class assignments, budgeting, and staffing needs. It also means that you and your child can begin to bond with your new school through both school-wide events including Kindergarten visitation day.

Make sure the school has accurate contact information, including your name and the name of your child, birthday of your child, your address, phone number, and e-mail address. Simply call the school (677-3631) and ask to be put on our list to receive our school newsletter and notification of upcoming events.

What if we want to attend Trinidad School but do not live in the District?

To be eligible to attend Trinidad School when you live outside of the district boundaries you will need to submit an inter-district transfer request. To help school districts plan for supporting enrolled students there are some important deadlines for submitting inter-district transfer requests. The window for submitting a new inter-district transfer request is December 1st and February 1st.

  • Please complete the interdistrict transfer application and submit to your school district of residence (DOR) before February 1st.
  • If your application is approved by the DOR, it will be forwarded to Trinidad to school.
  • Trinidad School will then review your application and respond to the DOR and you with a decision
  • You may then enroll your student in Trinidad School, please contact the front office at (707) 677-3631.
  • For your convenience our Board Adopted Interdistrict Policy can be found here.

What can I do to prepare my child for kindergarten?

  • Attend any of the county wide First Five play groups (firstfivehumboldt.org), facilitate social time for your child to connect with other children.
  • Enroll your child in a reputable preschool program. Salmonberry Preschool is located on our campus and managed by Head Start Humboldt. Contact the Director at 677-0477 for additional information.
  • Attend a Preparedness Meeting in the spring for parents of 2- to 5-year-old children, so you can learn what is expected in kindergarten. Call the office for the date and time.
  • Read to your child every day!

What are the immunization requirements?

Kindergarten requires documentation of your child's immunization record at or before entry, with the following:
    • Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Pertussis (DTaP, DTP, Tdap, or Td) — 5 doses (4 doses OK if one was given on or after 4th birthday. 3 doses OK if one was given on or after 7th birthday.)

    • Polio (OPV or IPV) — 4 doses (3 doses OK if one was given on or after 4th birthday)

    • Hepatitis B — 3 doses

    • Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) — 2 doses (Both given on or after 1st birthday)

    • Varicella (Chickenpox) — 2 doses (or documentation of diagnosed disease)

For 7th-12th graders, at least 1 dose of pertussis-containing vaccine is required on or after 7th birthday.

For additional information, see the Shots for School or the Immunization Branch of the California Department of Public Health websites.

Please also note that health and dental screenings are also required by California law. Call the school office for more details and the needed forms.

How do I know if Trinidad School is the best choice for my child?

  • Make an appointment with the teacher for an observation in the classroom and an opportunity to discuss the needs of your child.
  • Attend the “Parent Orientation Meeting” in February or May.
  • Send your child to Kindergarten Visitation Day in February or May.
  • Arrange for a tour of the school and meet our principal, Alyse Nichols.
  • Talk to other parents whose children have attended our school or community members who have been involved with the school.
  • Get involved early—even before your child begins attending school!

Here's a more detailed view of making that choice:

- Observe in the Classroom: Parent observations are encouraged, in order to gain a more complete understanding about what happens in the classroom. Personal questions can be answered with more in-depth explanations about the program. Call for an appointment to make sure the time of day you attend is spent observing what interests you about the program.

- Parent Orientation Meeting: This meeting is an opportunity for you to meet the teacher, learn about the kindergarten program, and our school offerings. The meeting is usually held in February and May. Families on our mailing list will receive an invitation in the mail.

- Kindergarten Visitation Day: Have your child attend kindergarten for one-day in February or May to experience what kindergarten will be like. Meeting the teacher early makes the transition easier when school begins in the fall. Families on our mailing list will receive an invitation.

- Tour the School and Meet the Principal: Tours can be conducted any time by calling the office at 677-3631. (A scheduled tour is conducted at the Parent Orientation meeting in February.) To learn about school-wide programs, staff and events, stop by the office or make an appointment to visit with our Superintendent/Principal Alyse Nichols

- Recommendations of Parents/Friends/Community Members: Solicit input from your friends and community members, especially those who have had children in the program. Names and phone numbers of parents can be provided, who have offered to talk to you about their experiences in the kindergarten program.

- Get Involved: Begin early getting involved in school events and organizations. Our school hosts a community dinner/dance in the fall and spring. Our Back-to-School Night, Ocean (Open) House, and Marine Education events are all open to interested parents who want to check out our school. The Parent Teachers Organization loves to have more members working for the welfare of the students and school spirit events. The Trinidad School Foundation recruits parents interested in fundraising.
